ENTREPRENEUR/ SELF-EMPLOYED WORK PERMIT
As part of the Significant Benefits provision (R205), Entrepreneurs or Self-Employed candidates may be issued a work permit without the employer’s prior obtainment of an LMIA. Seeking to establish a business in Canada, the applicant is required to demonstrate that he could generate significant economic, social or cultural benefits or opportunities for Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
As part of the criteria to be met, the applicant should possess a minimum of 50% of the business in question.
There exist two main categories for this type of work permit: 1) applicants seeking only temporary residence, 2) applicants seeking eventual permanent residence through a relevant provincial nominee program or Quebec entrepreneur program.
The work permit may have an initial validity of up two years. Any extensions will be granted only if a province selects or nominates the candidate for permanent immigration.
